How the engine worked it out
4 bays at 5'-11 1/2" on center. Vertical picket infill allows posts up to 6'-0" on center. Over 23'-10" between end post centers, 3 bays would be 7'-11 5/16" each, so the engine uses 4 at 5'-11 1/2".
15 pickets per bay, 3 5/8" clear. No opening may pass a 4" sphere, and the engine designs to 3 7/8" to leave room for fabrication tolerance. Each bay is 5'-9 1/2" clear between posts with 3/4" pickets. 14 pickets would leave 3 15/16" gaps, so the engine uses 15.
